Discussions with HRM

Posted Thursday, August 7, 2008

The following is the text of a message I sent to 3 Councillors (Snow, Harvey and Outhit) after I had spoken with them at the 5 Aug. Council meeting. This is followed by replies received from Councillors Harvey and Snow.

"Thank you to each of you for giving me a moment of your time last evening during the Council Meeting break.
I appreciate that the Curling issue at the Sackville Sports Stadium is still on your respective radars.
I wish to reiterate some points I raised last night. The inability since 2003 to arrange a long term agreement with HRM to curl at the Stadium facility is increasingly inhibiting our ability to achieve growth, which all seem to agree, is crucial to meet the needs of both curling in this area and of HRM. Our uncertain future makes membership growth, fund raising through sponsorship and advertising, and hiring of professional management very difficult.
While a continued lack of a decision about our future does allow us to continue a curling program, day to day, there are no other positives in this situation from our point of view.
I would appreciate any information you are able to provide to us, and any action you can take to move this question along.

Les Macey - President
Lakeshore Curling Club"

From Councillor Harvey:  "I am hoping this matter can be put to rest next month.  Glad to see you at council."

From Councillor Snow:  "Always a pleasure seeing and chatting with you.  I will ask Doug * to reply and give us an indication of when council can expect to see this back.

As per councils direction (way back when) it was voting and passed that your group was to be giving a long term lease.  I will also ask Doug to respond to why councils direction was not followed."

* "Doug" - Doug Rafuse; HRM Staff, lead negotiator in our discussion with HRM.
